Triocca
Triocca was founded by Ríona Ó Duinnín in 2003 for a performance at the Music for Galway series. In 2006 they won a place on Music Network's Young Musicwide scheme, enabling them to perform at arts festivals and venues all over Ireland to critical acclaim. In 2008 they were invited to Singapore, where they gave master-classes and a performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. They were also the first Irish group to perform at the Arts House in Singapore. In the same year they were also invited to perform at the European Central Bank’s Cultural Festival in Frankfurt. In July 2009 they made their UK debut at the National Portrait Gallery in London as part of a UK tour. That same year they performed on RTE's 'The View' as part of the launch of their debut cd, Trios for Flute, Viola & Harp on the Lyric FM label. Described as 'One of the country's finest emerging ensembles' Triocca have commissioned and premiered works by James Wilson, Philip Martin, Eric Sweeney and Linda Buckley, amongst others.
Ríona Ó Duinnín is a graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music where she received a First Class Honours Degree studying with Bill Dowdall. Subsequently she was awarded a scholarship to study in New York with Jeanne Baxtresser, former principal flute with the New York Philharmonic, at the Manhattan School of Music, graduating with a Masters Degree. In Ireland she has appeared as soloist with both the RTÉ National Symphony and Concert Orchestras and is currently Principal flute with the Wexford Festival Opera. Ríona is a keen chamber musician and has performed at the Vogler International Spring festival as well as at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival at Bantry. She is a founding member of Triocca, a flute, viola and harp trio who have performed to critical acclaim in Ireland, the UK and Singapore. She is also a member of Dublin Winds, Ireland's premier wind quintet. Riona has been invited to participate in many music festivals in the US and Europe and was a Fellow at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Centre in Massachusetts for two summers, where she had the opportunity to work and perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Nancy Johnson is a graduate of Manchester University, the Royal Northern College of Music and The Juilliard School, New York, where she gained her Master of Music degree. Her teachers include Hilary Hart, Susie Meszaros and Toby Appel. She was the viola player of the Degas String Quartet, resident at Syracuse University, New York, and as a member of the Tavec String Quartet she gave performances at the Wigmore Hall in London and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Nancy lives in London and has a busy freelancing career, performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and many other Orchestras and Chamber Ensembles in the UK and abroad. She is also a keen Swing Dancer!
Geraldine O’Doherty studied harp at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and later, at the Konservatorium fur Musik in Zürich with the eminent French harpist Catherine Michel. During her time there she won a top prize at the Franz Josef Reinl International Harp Competition in Munich and the Kiwanis Musikpreis in Zurich. Since returning to Ireland, Geraldine has been busy recording four critically acclaimed CD’s of chamber music for violin, cello and harp with the group Reflecting Strings. She has also premiered numerous chamber and solo works by Irish composers including "Endless the white clouds.." by John Buckley for the 9th World Harp Congress in Dublin. In the field of light music, she played concert and Irish harp for the world premiere of the Broadway musical "The Pirate Queen" and this year, for the European premiere of "The Light in the Piazza". In 2006, Geraldine took up the position of Principal Harp with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and was appointed to the teaching staff of the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
