Syrius Trio
Elizabeth Cooney (violin) Jane Cords-O'Hara (cello) and Bobby Chen (piano) perform two concerts as well as launching their debut cd, Syrius Trio: Salomon Jadassohn Piano Trios Nos. 1 – 3, (Toccata Classics TOCC 0107).
Comprising of three exciting young talents, Syrius Trio present the repertoire of the piano trio in a fresh and dynamic way. Elizabeth Cooney, violin and Bobby Chen, piano, both studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Royal Academy of Music, London, respectively. Jane Cords - O'Hara, cello, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and the Mannes College, New York. The trio was awarded a place on Music Network’s Young Musicwide Scheme in 2006 and have since performed extensively in Ireland and abroad. Highlights in the past three years have included the presentation of an all Shostakovich programme at the Weill Hall at Carnegie, New York, and performances at the Musica Nova Festival in Brazil where the trio performed the works of contemporary Irish composers including Ben Dwyer who was commissioned by Music Network to compose a work for the trio.
Their debut CD, Syrius Trio: Salomon Jadassohn Piano Trios Nos. 1-3 (Toccata Classics TOCC 0107), is a lyrical and accessibly romantic presentation of Jadassohn’s first three piano trios, all of which were hitherto unrecorded. The first trio was composed in 1858, the second 1860 and the third in 1880. A possible victim of anti-semiticism sweeping European German-speaking lands in the 19th century, Jadassohn suffered ignominity as a composer after his death, and his music was very rarely performed. This despite the fact that he had composed over 140 works in many different genres, and was considered a master of counterpoint and harmony. A noted educationalist, he also authored important texts on composition and music theory and was appointed a professor of piano and composition at Leipzig Conservatory later in life, teaching musical luminaries such as Ferrucio Busoni, Edvard Grieg and Richard Franck.
