September 2016: ‘Edges of Light’

03 October 2016

‘Edges of Light’ was a new collaboration between the prodigiously talented dancer Colin Dunne, fiddler Tola Custy, harpist Maeve Gilchrist and uilleann piper David Power. This newly-commissioned work is a sparkling kaleidoscope of melody and rhythm inspired by the natural sounds and shimmering patterns of light that announce Ireland’s day.

During their national tour, fiddler Tola Custy, harpist Maeve Gilchrist and uilleann piper David Power facilitated eleven Learning and Participation activities including instrumental workshops, an individual mentor session, a mixed instrument workshop, and a group demonstration and Q&A session, where they discussed their influences and the inspiration for their Music Network tour. 101 participants were involved in total and we partnered with Moving on Music, Music Generation Mayo, CBS Primary School Ennis, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Music Generation Laois and Cork ETB School of Music to organise the activities.

"My 13 year old son came out of Tola Custy’s fiddle workshop last night all enthused again about playing the fiddle. He really enjoyed it and said Tola was an excellent teacher who made it really enjoyable. Please pass on my huge thanks to Tola Custy and congrats for organising/hosting an excellent event for young musicians." Parent of participant

"Highly recommend it…. Great teacher" Uilleann pipes workshop participants

"Maeve’s lesson was amazing; it was like she was reading my harp mind! So it was half theory/practical and half learning a beautiful new piece. I was challenged so much by the lesson which means I'm learning. You can tell she is a natural teacher." Mentor session participant

"[My son] really enjoyed the experience with Tola! I thought the concert afterwards was pure magic!" Parent of participant

"What an amazing opportunity! Thank you so much Music Network for the change to hear and witness such incredible playing and performance." Harp masterclass participant

Project Partner Feedback

"It was wonderful for the students to see Maeve in concert and then to receive an inspirational masterclass." Dr Clíona Doris, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama

"Moving On Music (MOM) and Music Network have had a strong partnership working together on various cross border tours over the years. In this, the first year of our Emerging Artist Programme, we were delighted to work with Music Network in a different capacity through arranging a mentoring session with one their touring musicians and one of our emerging artists, which proved to be very beneficial. The MOM Emerging Artist Programme creates the opportunity for a number of emerging NI artists to work with MOM over 12 months to develop their careers in a tailored and individual way, for more info please see our website." Paula Kiernan, Moving on Music

"A dynamic and inspiring performance at the Triskel. Students were enraptured by their talent and creativity - we all came home a little more motivated to step ’outside the box’ musically and see where that might bring us. Naturally intuitive musicians and people who really cared about the message they were portraying to the young people at the workshops." Carol Daly, Cork ETB School of Music

"The workshops were a fantastic experience for our young musicians. Tola Custy, David Power and Maeve Gilchrist were inspirational and their workshops will have a long lasting legacy for participants." Rosa Flannery, Music Generation Laois
