Concertos para Bébes

Tour Dates

Sat 25 May, 4pm Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray
Sun 26 May, 10:30pm Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray

Portuguese company Concertos para Bébes is inviting babies from Bray and beyond to join them for an interactive family concert made especially for them.

Musican in Residence Eamon Sweeney will join the group as a guest performer for a concert that will include everything from baroque music from Monteverdi and Gaspar Sanz, to beautiful Irish airs like the well-known ‘Dia do bheatha’. Watch as music, wonder and giggles flood the room!

Established in Leiria, Portugal nearly 30 years ago, Concertos para Bebés specialise in concerts where the very youngest children are invited to listen to classical music, traditional songs, pop-rock, and vocal-instrumental improvisations in a participative, up-close environment created especially for them. Shunning the idea that babies should only hear baby music, the group instead use movement, dance, theatrical lighting and props to mesmerise even the very youngest babies with the sounds and silences of proper, grown-up music performed by very fine musicians.

With something in the region of 1000 performances under their belts, Concertos para Bébes certainly know how astonish, entertain and raise more than a few giggles.

“Paulo Lameiro [founder of Concertos para Bebés]… broke the rule that states concerts are… completely forbidden to little children in nappies.” Time Out

“Concerts at Mermaid” is a series of six concerts curated by Musician in Residence Eamon Sweeney as part of the Music Network Artist Residency in partnership with the Mermaid Arts Centre and Wicklow County Council. Initiated by Music Network in 2015, the first Music Network Artist Residency programme was developed in partnership with Triskel Christchurch and supported by Cork City Council and was curated by pianist Phil Ware.  In 2017 the programme was developed in collaboration with Wexford County Council Arts Office and the National Opera House, Wexford and was curated by guitarist Redmond O’Toole.
