|10 Dec, 8:00pm, €25 / €20||Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin 8|
Prepare to be blown away by the extraordinary sound of The Seafarer Trio, performed by Trio con Brio Copenhagen with narration by actor Barry McGovern and visuals by Jila Peacock, in a very special end of year concert on Wednesday 10 December in Dublin's Smock Alley Theatre. Completing the programme is Haydn’s well-known Piano Trio No. 39 in G major, Hob. XV/25 and one of Mendelssohn’s greatest chamber works – Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49.
This concert marks the leading piano trio’s first performance in Dublin. Korean sisters Soo-Jin and Soo-Kyung Hong and Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer founded Trio con Brio Copenhagen in Vienna in 1999. The sisters had played together since childhood, and Jens Elvekjaer and Soo-Kyung Hong (who are now married) had played piano and cello duos together for years. The group have won countless awards and performed in such significant venues as Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall and the Konzerthaus Berlin.
Composer Sally Beamish’s setting of 10th century poem The Seafarer - perhaps the most famous of all Anglo-Saxon poems after Beowulf - is an evocative interpretation of the story of the first man in history on his quest for eternal life. The Seafarer Trio is the central work of three pieces composed by Beamish based on Charles Harrison Wallace’s powerful translation of the ancient verse. Written in 2000 for piano trio and narrator, it depicts a metaphorical sea voyage with sounds of crashing waves, soaring birds and icy landscapes signified by the four performers.
Game of Thrones actor Barry McGovern joins Trio con Brio Copenhagen as narrator for The Seafarer Trio. One of Ireland's most skilled and experienced performers, McGovern has had a long career in theatre, film, television and radio. Set to striking monoprint installations by artist Jila Peacock, the dramatic score and engaging narration promises to deliver one of the most compelling concert experiences of the year.
