Babies from Bray and beyond are invited to a very special interactive performance by Portuguese performing group Concertos para Bébes. Extra date added due to popular demand.

Part of “Concerts at the Mermaid” Music Network Artist Residency 2018/19 in partnership with Wicklow County Council Arts Office and Mermaid County Wicklow Arts Centre.

“Paulo Lameiro… broke the rule that states concerts are… completely forbidden to little children in nappies.” Time Out

Portuguese company Concertos para Bébes is inviting babies from Bray and beyond to join them for two interactive family concerts with a difference at the Mermaid Arts Centre on Saturday 25th May at 4 pm and on Sunday 26th May at 10:30 am. Musician in Residence Eamon Sweeney will join the group as a guest performer for a concert that will include everything from baroque music from Monteverdi and Gaspar Sanz, to beautiful Irish airs like the well-known ‘Dia do bheatha’.

Established in Leiria, Portugal nearly 30 years ago, Concertos para Bebés specialises in concerts where the very youngest children are invited to listen to classical music, traditional songs, pop-rock, and vocal-instrumental improvisations in a participative, up-close environment created especially for them.

Shunning the idea that babies should only hear baby music, the group instead use movement, dance, theatrical lighting and props to mesmerise even the very youngest babies with the sounds and silences of proper, grown-up music performed by very fine musicians.

The group’s founder, musicologist Paulo Lameiro, believes that “It is essential that the concert experience be pleasant for both the adult holding the baby and the baby. They're like sponges: if the mother holds her breath because of the intense emotions caused by music, the infant on her lap will experience the same thrill”.  Lameiro also operates on the belief that it is important to give children opportunities to experience music in the earliest years: “If we expose an infant to music for the first time at the age of 6, it is too late: we missed the years during which their ability to absorb sound experiences was most intense”.

With something in the region of 1000 performances under their belts, Concertos para Bébes certainly know how astonish, entertain and raise more than a few giggles.

“On the lap, in cradles or sitting on colourful cushions, 93 children listened to the work of Ravel, Bach, Mozart and Stravinsky. They didn’t cry or ask to leave the room.” Newspaper Público (Portugal)

Concertos para Bébes’ performance in Bray is the final in a series of six “Concerts at the Mermaid” curated by Musician in Residence Eamon Sweeney, as part of the Music Network Artist Residency in partnership with Wicklow County Council Arts Office and Mermaid County Wicklow Arts Centre. Music Network is funded by the Arts Council.
