Music Network Artist Residency Launch Concert, Triskel Christchurch 25th October
01 October 2015
"... a feather-light touch, an encyclopaedic knowledge of chords and the ability to play standards like he’s inventing them on the spot" – The Los Angeles Daily News on Peter Bernstein
"An impressive demonstration of the straight-ahead bop piano lineage." – The Irish Times on the Phil Ware Trio
Music Network is delighted to announce a new artist residency in partnership with Triskel Christchurch and supported by Cork City Council. To celebrate the residency, the first of its kind in Ireland, the ever-popular Phil Ware and his trio will be joined by guitarist Peter Bernstein in a special launch concert on Sunday 25th October that will kick off the pianist’s six-month tenure at Triskel in typically hard-swinging style.
A mainstay of the New York and international jazz scenes since 1989, Bernstein’s career encompasses countless club and festival appearances. He has also appeared on more than eighty recordings, nine of them under his leadership. His impeccable sideman credentials include bands led by Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Cobb, Nicholas Payton and George Coleman, and he currently co-leads a highly acclaimed group with organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart.
Phil Ware’s career as a pianist has taken him throughout Europe and as far afield as America, Asia and the Middle East. His long-standing piano trio, with Dave Redmond (bass) and Kevin Brady (piano), has twice been chosen to represent Ireland at the Eurojazz Festival in Mexico City. As a sideman, he has played with international figures such as Guy Barker, Perico Sambeat, Peter Ind, Ian Shaw, Gene Caldarazzo and heroes of the Acid Jazz revival, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers.
Initiated by Music Network, the residency includes a 5-date concert programme with Irish and international musicians of renown, as well as a series of outreach initiatives and musician mentorships. Sharon Rollston, CEO Music Network explained, “This new initiative, developed in partnership with Triskel and Cork City Council, supports Music Network’s mission to make high quality live music available and accessible to people throughout Ireland, while supporting the career development of musicians”.
Director of Triskel Tony Sheehan said “Triskel has always been known as the year-round venue for jazz, and so for us it’s exciting to partner with Music Network and Cork City Council to bring this intensive series of concerts and outreach programmes at a time when jazz music is getting more difficult to hear live. It’s especially exciting to work with Phil to bring some really top flight jazz musicians to Cork over the next six months”.
Jean Brennan, Arts Officer at Cork City Council commented, “Cork City Council’s Arts Office is delighted to partner with Music Network and Triskel Christchurch to develop this unique residency with Phil Ware. The approach of mixing performance, education and outreach work means that musicians based in Cork, including music students from CIT and Music Generation tutors and students will have opportunities to engage with performing musicians of the highest calibre. This is a wonderful opportunity for Cork City”.
Full details of the residency programme will be announced at the launch.
