"An incandescent tour-de-force" The Guardian

Don’t miss the chance to hear the sublime pianist Michael Wollny’s sensational jazz trio, on tour from 23 – 29 October. Renowned for his adventurous spirit and the electrifying spontaneity of his live gigs, multi-award winning Wollny is joined by drummer Eric Schaefer, and double bass player Christian Weber. Details at Music Network tours are funded by the Arts Council and are presented in association with RTÉ lyric fm.

German jazz pianist Michael Wollny has exploded onto the European jazz scene in recent years, thanks to his reputation for presenting "a dazzling, high-energy live show" [Jazzwise Magazine] as well as a series of highly-acclaimed recordings. From tender, Tom Waits-esque ballads to wild rollercoaster rides, the ideas come thick and fast, each almost tripping over the last.  His trademark: the unpredictable, the quest for the never-before-heard, the courage to devote himself to the moment, to make the unforeseen sound self-evident. His desire to keep reinventing himself, both in terms of sound and composition; makes him a “consummate piano maestro” [FAZ] and “the biggest (jazz) musician personality that Germany has produced since Albert Mangelsdorff” [Hamburger Abendblatt].

Like his late ACT stablemate Esbjörn Svensson, Wollny melds jazz, rock, pop and classical music into a thrillingly inventive whole, with excursions into Alban Berg, Edgard Varése, the Twin Peaks soundtrack and the Flaming Lips sitting alongside original compositions penned by the trio.

The current line-up features his long-time collaborator and fellow composer Eric Schaefer on drums, and double bass player Christian Weber who was recently singled out by The Wire as being "one of the most interesting players on the European electro-acoustic improv scene". These three ideally matched musicians never fail to find fascinating new directions for the music, or to take the listener by surprise. Their latest album “Nachtfahrten” was released on ACT Music in 2015 to great critical acclaim, the Irish Times comparing the pace of the album to "Debussy set upon by Tom Waits and Thelonious Monk in a dark alley".

Tickets for all regional concerts are available from individual promoters around the country. Single tickets for Dublin concerts range from €10 - €20 and can be purchased by calling Music Network on (01) 4750224 or booking online at This tour is supported by the Goethe-Institut Irland.
