"His voice has something of the effect of a person with a physical beauty you just can’t tear your eyes away from." – The Irish Times
Music Network is delighted to present captivating German baritone Benjamin Appl with a romantically-coloured programme of operatic arias and well-known songs, on tour 15 – 23 November. Making live music happen across the country, Music Network provides an opportunity to see some of the world’s foremost musicians at affordable prices, funded by the Arts Council. Details here.
Following his debut at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year, Appl appeared with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in September, with The Irish Times declaring “a vocal presence so arresting it almost seems hypnotic.” Selected as part of the European Concert Hall Organisation’s Rising Stars programme, and a current BBC New Generation Artist, Appl has enthralled audiences across Europe and America with his smooth-timbred voice, expressive delivery and physically-charged performances. The last-ever student of the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, he was awarded the prestigious Schubert Prize by the Deutsche Schubert-Gesellschaf in 2012.
For this tour, Appl is accompanied by Gary Matthewman, one of the UK's leading song pianists whose former recital partners include such luminaries as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Thomas Allen, Mark Padmore, Ailyn Perèz and Roderick Williams.
Together, they will perform a beautiful programme including arias from popular Mozart operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute, as well as arias from Lehár’s The Merry Widow and Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Well known songs by Mendelssohn, Poulenc and Schubert will also feature. A new work by acclaimed Irish composer Marian Ingoldsby has been commissioned by Music Network for this tour.
Music Network’s mission is to make live music available and accessible to as many people as possible. As part of this tour, Appl and Matthewman will host a series of masterclasses for music students, connecting Music Network tours with music education to give young people rich, holistic musical experiences.
Music Network tours are funded by the Arts Council and are presented in association with RTÉ lyric fm. This tour is supported by the Goethe-Institut. Tickets for all regional concerts are available from individual venues around the country. Single tickets for Dublin are available from €15 and can be purchased by calling Music Network on (01) 475 0224 or booking online here.
