Musicians and the Digital World, Music Publishing – Nurturing and Protecting Creativity, Finance and Taxation
Following on from the success of Music Network’s ‘Taking control of your performance career 2017’, we are delighted to offer a series of free training sessions for Irish and Ireland-based professional performing musicians working in all musical genres.
These sessions offer support by providing access to relevant and up-to-date expertise, resources and professional supports and focus once again on some of the non-artistic elements of a successful music performance career.
On Thursday November 1st saxophonist, composer, producer and educator Nick Roth will lead a session on 'Musicians and the Digital World'. On Thursday November 8th music publisher Steve Lindsey takes a session on 'Music Publishing – Nurturing and Protecting Creativity'. Finally on Thursday November 22nd join Chartered Accountant Gaby Smyth as he discusses 'Finance and Taxation'.
The training sessions are free and will take place at Music Network’s offices in the National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2. Space is limited to 10 places per session and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Musicians and the Digital World with Nick Roth
This session will focus on career development strategies for professional musicians in the age of the Internet, exploring ways in which new digital media platforms and enhanced content can generate performance and composition opportunities. Participants will learn how to use new technology to reach wider audiences and develop their communication skills, as well as how to use data to analyse and optimise their practise. It will explore where new trends are leading the music industry, whilst highlighting those elements of musical life that remain constant despite changes in the medium of presentation. Nick Roth Biography:
Nick Roth is a saxophonist, composer, producer and educator.
His work explores the liberation of improvisation from composition, the poetic syntax of philosophical enquiry and the function of music as translative epistemology.
A curious predisposition and a steadfast refusal to accept the existence of boundaries between the real and the imaginary has led to collaborations with an array of international performers, composers, choreographers, directors, visual artists, festivals, poets and ensembles.
Engaging in conversation with mathematical biologists, astrophysicists, ecologists and hydrologists, whilst simultaneously subsumed by an insatiable appetite for literature, his compositions interrogate the inherence of meaning in formal structure and the symbiotic resonance of words as sound and text.
In 2017 he was artist-in-residence at the European Space Agency (ESTEC) and the dlr LexIcon and in 2015 at the California Academy of Sciences and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).
He is artistic director of the Yurodny Ensemble, a founder member of the Water Project and a partner at Diatribe Records, Ireland’s leading record label for new music. His work is represented by the Contemporary Music Centre (CMC) and the Association of Irish Composers (AIC).

Music Publishing – Nurturing and Protecting Creativity with Steve Lindsey
This session will cover essential areas of music publishing from the creation of a composition to registering a copyright while also looking at the role of rights organisations such as IMRO, MCPS, etc. Participants will receive an insight into the different ways that music can be used and various income streams. In addition, the session will cover basic composer agreements and licensing.
Steve Lindey Biography:
Steve entered the music industry in 1975 while at Liverpool College of Art as a writer and bassist with the band Deaf School. He went on to record three albums for Warner Bros Records with Deaf School, followed by two albums with The Planets.
His first job as a music publisher came in 1985 as Professional Manager with Chappell Music in London (later Warner Chappell) and was appointed General Manager of Go! Discs Music in 1988. There he worked with The La’s and Norman Cook’s Beats International. Lindsey joined Island Music as General Manager in 1990 and was associated with The Beautiful South, Massive Attack, Pulp and Irish artists such as U2, The Cranberries and Gavin Friday.
In 1997 he established and ran independent publishing company Monument Music and, later, set up Melankolic Songs in conjunction with Massive Attack.
Steve settled in Ireland with his family in 2001 and shortly after founded Elevate Music as a stand-alone Irish publishing company. Elevate currently represents works by writers as diverse as Cathy Davey, Aslan, Westlife, The Rubberbandits, HamsandwicH and IFTA winning score composer Niall Byrne.
In addition to his work as a publisher Steve sits on the boards of the Irish Music Rights Organisation Company (IMRO), the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (Ireland) (MCPS) and the Music Publishers Association of Ireland (MPAI).

Finance and Taxation with Gaby Smyth
This session will cover how to record income and expenditure for tax filing, allowable expenses, treatment of capital outlay, Artists Exemption, VAT registration and its implications. Registered participants will be sent an information pack on Accounting and Tax for Artists, for printing in advance of the day.
Gaby Smyth Biography:
Gaby Smyth studied at UCD (B. Sc Hons, HDE), University of Limerick (M.A), Leinster School of Music (LLSM), and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has been in financial and taxation consultancy for over twenty five years, specialising in the literary, music, film and theatre arts – representing and advising many of the major Irish and international practitioners in these areas.
Gaby has also been involved in the leadership and governance of many arts organisations in Ireland; he has been the chairman of the boards of Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Corn Exchange Theatre Company, TEAM Educational Theatre Company, the Audi Dublin International Film Festival and Opera Theatre Company. He is currently chairman of the newly formed Irish National Opera. Additionally, he was non-executive chairman of Boulder Media Ltd., a major Irish animation company, and Screen Producers Ireland, the umbrella organisation for the film, animation and TV industry in the state.
Gaby is currently chair of the companies that manage the estate of Barry Flanagan, and, most recently, has been appointed to advise the estate of Seamus Heaney.
