The Irish Pipe Band Association's stated aims are to:

• Promote and encourage the culture and advancement of Piping and Drumming;
• Promote and encourage a bond and fellowship with all Pipers and Drummers;
• Provide a proper system of teaching and instruction under which the members of Tralee Pipes & Drums (St John’s PB) can flourish;
• Maintain a band for the enjoyment of the membership and the community in general.

The Association provides both instruments and tuition free of charge, so that its membership is open to all and not discriminatory on financial, social, ethnic or any other grounds. If a person wants to learn to play, then the Association is more than delighted to welcome them.
