Soniphorm

Soniphorm was founded by sound artist and instrument builder Ed Devane in 2017 as an outlet for digital design, digital fabrication and instrument building courses as well as instrument sales. Specialising in an experimental and all inclusive approach to music-making that touches on STEAM and student-led learning, Soniphorm has given workshops all over Ireland for organisations such as National Museum of Ireland, Facebook, Improvised Music Company, The Ark and many more. In addition to this, Ed has created several interactive sound installations for organisations including IMMA, Science Gallery and RCC Letterkenny. The Soniphorm studio is based in Gweedore, Co. Donegal.

Many of the instruments Ed has built are one-offs or installation commissions. He is developing instruments for large scale ensemble performances, where building workshops are an integral part of the process. Participants learn about sound, instrument mechanisms, structures etc through building their own instrument, followed by rehearsals and public performance. The instruments are very simple, but amassed in large ensembles, make complex sonic textures and drones. This project would suit trained musicians and novices alike.
