Prepare to be charmed by the quiet charisma and innate musicality of this thrilling new duo curated by Music Network comprising Franco-Spanish guitarist Thibaut Garcia and German cellist Isang Enders, both young artists with rapidly-growing international reputations on tour 22 April – 1 May. This unique coming together of two of classical music’s brightest stars will showcase the versatility of their instruments through a range of music from Bach to Bogdanović, and a new commission from Benjamin Dwyer. Recently hailed by Classical Guitar Magazine as “the new face of classical guitar”, 23-year-old Garcia has already cut a swathe through the world’s foremost guitar competitions — taking first prize in six— thanks to his gossamer light touch, wonderfully sensitive interpretations and a repertoire that runs the gamut from Bach to Piazzolla to world premieres of contemporary compositions by composers such as Jean-Frédéric Neuburger and Vincent A. Jockin. In 2016, Thibaut Garcia made his concerto debut with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. He was appointed the BBC New Generation Artist in London in 2017, leading him to perform in recitals and concerto performances around the UK. He is signed exclusively with Warner Classics/Erato for his recording projects. His second album, 'Tribute to J. S. Bach', will be released in the Autumn of 2018.
At the age of 20, Isang Enders was appointed principal cello of the Dresden Staatskapelle, making him the youngest section leader in Germany. Noted for his clear, penetrating tone and his big-hearted, dynamic performances, Enders has enjoyed collaborations with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker and Stavanger Symphony orchestras and performs regularly with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked with eminent conductors including Myung-Whun Chung, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta and Vasily Petrenko. His highly-acclaimed and early recording of the Bach Cello Suites on Berlin Classics (2014) was a triumph.
Benjamin Dwyer’s 'sin títolo', commissioned by Music Network especially for this tour, will receive its premiere at St. Iberius Church in Wexford on Sunday 22nd April. Dwyer describes his new work as follows:
“…sin títolo (‘without title’) is an instrumental reflection upon a madrigal by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. In looking back, however, I needed to realize this music through the refracted lens of four hundred years of ongoing compositional transformation. sin títolo is a not-quite-developed snap shot of Gesualdo’s music”.
This is the second of two new works commissioned by Music Network for the Spring 2018 season - Siobhán Cleary’s ‘An Cailleach’ received its premiere at Abbeystrewry Church, Skibbereen on Sunday 4th March - continuing Music Network’s work of actively commissioning and touring new works by Irish composers, as well as programming existing contemporary Irish music within relevant concert programmes.
Music Network’s Spring 2018 season has featured the very best of Irish and international musicians. The season opened with four luminaries from Irish traditional super-groups Niamh Parsons (Arcady), Ciarán Tourish (Altan), Liam Kelly (Dervish) and John Doyle (Solas). In February we were joined by Trish Clowes, one of the UK’s finest and most innovative jazz saxophonists, followed in March by the most recent winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, Anna Tsybuleva. The season will come to an exuberant close in May with another specially curated line-up featuring vocalists Heidi Talbot and Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, aided and abetted by award winning multi-instrumentalist John McCusker and guitarist Paul Meehan, showcasing contemporary and traditional songs alongside polkas, slides and waltzes from the wilds of Kerry and Scotland.
