Camilla is a unique voice on the international jazz circuit, known for her love of fusing African and Western music and her hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz. She will be joined by her all-star band featuring Renato Paris (keys and vocals), Jihad Darwish (electric and double bass) and Rod Youngs (drums). The unmissable 10-date nationwide tour will run from 15 - 26 June with performances at Sligo, Newbridge, Kilkenny, Cork, Carrick-On-Shannon, Listowel, Dublin, Letterkenny, Belfast and Wexford. MOBO-nominated saxophonist and star of acclaimed group Jazz Jamaica Camilla George is regarded as one of the leading lights of British Jazz. A celebration of the jazz tradition from its African roots to its modern forms, her music is an exciting and energetic blend of African and contemporary jazz influences. Camilla and her band have appeared at EFG London Jazz festival, Love Supreme and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. The Evening Standard has dubbed Camilla as "The Golden Girl of Jazz", while the London Jazz Review referred to her "mature and imaginative compositions" and "sublime saxophone solos."
A BRIT School graduate and a regular on the vibrant young London jazz scene, music has taken Renato Paris worldwide and seen him work with an array of artists including Julian Joseph, Burt Bacharach, Jorja Smith, Nicola Piovani and Carleen Anderson. As well as leading his own band, he is a key member of two-time MOBO award-winner Moses Boyd’s Exodus and has appeared at Grammy Camp L.A., JazzFM Awards, BBC Proms, BBC Maida Vale Live Sessions, Ronnie Scotts, NPR Tiny Desk and on London’s West End.
Touring, performing and recording worldwide, bassist Jihad Darwish has worked with leading artists including Sting, Van Morrison, Imelda May, Mica Paris, Eric Bibb and Newton Faulkner. Jamie Cullum selected him as a featured artist for his BBC Radio 2 show and Jihad headlined a BBC Introducing showcase hosted by Jo Whiley and curated by Cullum live on Radio 2 at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
Rod Youngs is a composer and educator whose percussive skills personify diversity, authenticity and distinctiveness. His extraordinary musicianship has seen him record and perform with a formidable collection of artists including Hugh Masekela, Lee Konitz, John Hendricks, Denys Baptiste and Courtney Pine.
As part of Music Network's commitment to making live music accessible to people of all ages in Ireland, Camilla and her band will lead a series of music workshops for jazz musicians in school and community settings throughout this tour. The workshops will provide a unique opportunity for musicians to engage with and learn from some of the very best musicians the UK jazz scene has to offer.
