Between July and October last year the programme brought together some of Ireland’s most talented professional musicians across our six partner venues to foster collaborations and create new music.
Our 2022 RESONATE residencies were awarded to an eclectic mix of artists.
In Baile Mhúirne Pauline Scanlon collaborated on a traditional singing project with Armagh singer and multi-instrumentalist Barry Kerr, with singer and harpist Síle Denvir and percussionist Eamon Murray performing alongside them at Ionad Cultúrtha.
Mezzo-soprano Naomi Louisa O’Connell worked with pianist Gary Beecher and composer Emma O’Halloran at glór, Ennis, concertina player Niall Vallely collaborated with cellist Kate Ellis and Kenneth Edge on soprano saxophone at the National Opera House, Wexford, while Irish-Dutch singer and guitarist Patrick Stefan Groenland joined forces with Irish-Persian group Navá at Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny.
In Carrick-On-Shannon at The Dock, Soprano Elizabeth Hilliard worked with composer Gráinne Mulvey to create a new, comic work for voice and tape inspired by “spam” and classical violinist Patrick Rafter pushed the boundaries of the standard concert format with artist and composer Sam Perkin through their exploration of music and physicality/movement at Triskel Arts Centre, Cork.
And without further ado here are extracts of performances from some of our RESONATE 2022 artists - enjoy.
Niall Vallely, Kate Ellis & Kenneth Edge at National Opera House
Concertina player Niall Vallely collaborated with cellist Kate Ellis and Kenneth Edge to compose and perform a new series of pieces entitled 'Bearna' which translates as 'a gap' or 'space'. The trio explored the musical concepts offered by spaces that exist in between different genres of music and people's varied musical perspectives.
Patrick Rafter and Sam Perkins at Triskel Arts Centre
Patrick and Sam worked together to create 'Freedom In Performance'. Motivated by a common desire to push the boundaries of performance practice and challenge what is widely considered to be the accepted concert format, they experimented with gesture and movement to make these elements central to their final performance which took place at Triskel Arts Centre.
Pauline Scanlon and Barry Kerr at Ionad Culturtha, Baile Mhuirne
Renowned singer Pauline Scanlon from Dingle and Armagh singer and multi-instrumentalist Barry Kerr created 'The Longing', a collaborative traditional singing project that focuses on traditional songs where feelings of longing for home, freedom, love, acceptance and peace were central themes. The artists performed this new work live at Ionad Cultúrtha, Baile Mhúirne, with singer and harpist Síle Denvir and percussionist Eamon Murray.
Elizabeth Hilliard at The Dock
The world premiere performance of 'I am a escapee hyphen' was created by soprano Elizabeth Hilliard and composer Gráinne Mulve, directed by Helene Montague at The Dock, a piece for voice and electronics is based on “spam”.
Patrick Stefan Groenland and Navá at Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny
