Taking charge of your performance career 2019

Music Network presents a three day course for Irish and Ireland-based professional performing musicians working in all musical genres. This professional development course will help performing musicians to develop the self-promotion and presentation skills necessary to stand out in today’s increasingly competitive music industry. Delivered by leading industry professionals, the course will offer relevant and up-to-date expertise, resources and professional support in the areas of public relations, building an online presence, presentation skills, recording and photography. The course also includes an opportunity for attendees to avail of a short photo session with a professional photographer at no additional cost. The course unless otherwise specified below will take place at Music Network’s offices in the National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2.

Managing your own PR with Christine Monk

Wednesday 27th November 10.00am – 11.30am

This session will focus on how to successfully manage your own PR, including writing and formatting press releases, developing story angles and ideas, and pitching stories to media. A hands-on and engaging session, attendees will be invited to share examples of their own press releases in advance and receive personalised feedback from Christine on the day.

Christine Monk

Christine is a Dublin-based cultural publicist, working closely with cultural organisations, festivals and venues. In 2019 her client list includes The Gate Theatre, Cartoon Saloon, National Concert Hall, RTÉ Arts, National Youth Theatre and Feis Ceoil. She is currently a board member of Poetry Ireland and Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Building your Online Presence with Roseanne Smith

Wednesday 27th November 11.45am – 1.15pm

This session will showcase how to get the most out of marketing your music on social media and highlight particular strengths musicians bring to the table that can be utilised online. The session will examine/look at case studies within Ireland so attendees can learn about what to do (and what not to do) online. Attendees will be invited to complete a short questionnaire in advance so as to tailor the session to the needs of the musicians in attendance.

Roseanne Smith

Roseanne is an experienced online marketing consultant who has been working in online since 1999, blogging since 2003 and has tweeted 25k times since 2007. She works with a range of clients including artists, theatre makers, musicians and writers. A recognised expert in her field she is an assessor for the Digital Marketing Institute and delivers two Digital courses in Rathmines College Evening School.

The Mask of the Four Temperaments with Raymond Keane

Thursday 28th November 9.30am – 5.00pm

United Arts Club, 3 Fitzwilliam Street Upper, Dublin 2

Prepare to be surprised and to step out of your comfort zone with this full-day interactive and fun session on how to be authentically present in front of an audience.

Hippocrates identified that people tend to have a dominant temperament: choleric, sanguine, melancholic, or phlegmatic. Attendees will experience the temperaments through the use of masks and theatrical performance, and will leave with a well-rounded understanding of the topic and how to apply it to their professional career.

Comfortable clothing is advised. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on this day.

Raymond Keane

Raymond is a founding member of multi award winning Barabbas Theatre Company. His work as clown, actor, writer and director has appeared in almost every Irish Theatre and on international stages. He teaches Theatre of Clown and Theatre Making at National University Ireland Maynooth, Gaiety School of Acting Dublin, The Lir Academy of Dramatic Arts Dublin and he has recently become Associate Teaching Fellow at The Samuel Beckett School for Creative Arts at Trinity College Dublin. He regularly mentors actors and artists.

The Recording Environment with Laoise O'Brien and Eoin Brady

Friday 29th November 11.00am – 2.15pm

Consisting of two 90 minute sessions over three hours, this session will focus on a key area for any musician: audio recording. Topics covered will include the recording industry in Ireland, approaching labels, planning and preparing for a recording, from concept to finished product - a step by step guide to the process, the roles of the engineer and producer, artwork and reproduction, copyright and marketing.

Laoise O'Brien

Laoise is a producer and co-founder of Jiggery Pokery Productions which to date has produced over twenty-five albums to critical acclaim, in addition to video, radio content, and music for live productions. A practising musician, her production skill-set includes: project management, studio supervision, score reading, music editing, and art-work management. She works with a number of graphic designers, photo and videographers, technicians, and post-production professionals, in addition to a successful collaboration with recording engineer, Ben Rawlins.

Eoin Brady

Eoin has been a member of the RTÉ lyric fm production team since its inception in 1999. In addition to radio production, he is executive producer of the RTÉ lyric fm CD label. The RTÉ lyric fm label is dedicated to promoting Irish musicians and composers worldwide. The label aims to promote classical music, Irish musicians and composers at home and abroad by creating a commercially available, quality record of musical life in Ireland.

Photo Session for Attendees with Orla Murray

Wednesday 27th November from 2.00pm and Friday 29th November from 3.00pm

All attendees will have the opportunity on Wednesday or Friday for a ten minute photo session with a professional photographer (with or without their instrument). Photographs taken will be free for attendees to use following the session and a PDF guide on Portrait Tips will be provided in advance including advice on what/what not to wear when having your photo taken, how to pose for a professional photograph etc. Sessions will be scheduled on a first come first served basis once an attendee has booked their place on the course and will take place within walking distance of the National Concert Hall.

Orla has 20 years of experience working with corporate, Government, Semi-State, large institutions and charitable bodies. Her work appears weekly in national and online media and in particular in the business pages. It has also been reproduced in in-house publications, annual reports and client websites. Her regular client list includes but is not limited to the Institute of Public Administration, KPMG, Ernst & Young, the RDS, Reputation Inc., Department of Social Protection, Fingal County Council, Fingal LEO, Institute of Engineers, Enterprise Ireland, Central Bank and Nissan Ireland.
