The Butterfly Sessions: Ger Wolfe

The Butterfly Sessions: Ger Wolfe

Ger Wolfe
An online performance featuring a new commission composed and performed by master song-writer Ger Wolfe.

"With his gentle yearning folk melodies and easy-going voice, Cork’s Ger Wolfe has been creating understated but carefully crafted vignettes since his 1998 debut... exquisitely performed, arranged and recorded, it’s difficult to pick out highlights; such is the even quality of the tunes". So wrote Colm O’Regan in a Hotpress of Ger Wolfe’s 2013 album I Have Been Loved.

Ger continues to plough his way through the weird and wonderful world of song. Always a unique voice, working quietly and diligently away at his craft, he released his 8th full album of original music Melody Bright and The Favourite Sparrow in 2019 on the independent label Raggedy Records.

Like the popular Radio 1 documentary ‘Gentle Genius, Forgotten Poet', Melody Bright is a snapshot in time of an artist absorbed in creativity, constantly opening new ground. Currently in the pipeline are two recording projects, an album of recently written songs called The Morning Star and a collection of sean-nós songs in English and Irish called Seal im’ Aonar/Time Alone.

Touring for over twenty years both solo and with his musical friends The New Skylarks featuring Paul Frost (Bass), Edel Sullivan (Violin/strings) and Martin Leahy (drums) Ger blooms in live performance. As seen with some of his well known songs like ‘The Lark of Mayfield’, ‘The Curra Road’ and ‘Summer at my feet’ here is a songwriter who carefully observes the chaos and beauty of our fragile existence and puts them to fascinating music.

The Butterfly Sessions

Music Network has commissioned 24 musicians and composers to premiere new music in The Butterfly Sessions, an online performance series.

The 10-week series will feature two premieres each week broadcast on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm. Performances will be hosted on Music Network's YouTube channel and shared across all of the organisation's social media platforms.

This new initiative is one of a number of ways in which Music Network is supporting Irish and Ireland-based artists in the coming weeks during the Covid-19 outbreak.
