The Butterfly Sessions: Judith Ring & Lina Andonovska

Judith Ring
An online performance featuring a new commission by the critically acclaimed composer Judith Ring, performed by the Ireland-based Australian flautist Lina Andonovska.

Judith Ring is a composer and all round music lover based in Dublin, Ireland. She has been writing music since 1998 and has been greatly inspired by living in such places as Berlin, London, York, Paris, Wexford and Dublin. Her music stems from the electro-acoustic world and its core technique is based on the practices of musique concrète. Over the years this has expanded and been influenced by more improvised and instrumental territories derived from a deep exploration of instrumental timbre through collaborative projects with a large number of musicians.

Most recent works include a set of flute pieces for Lina Andonovska, a piece for flute and drum kit duo SlapBang (Lina Andonovska and Matthew Jacobson), a set of cello pieces for Martin Johnson and four pieces for vocal trio Silver Kites of which she is a member. She is currently writing a piece for the National Symphony Orchestra as part of the CMC Composer Lab.

Her EP The Ring Lieder was self-released in 2017 and used four poems by poet Roderick Ford as the lyrics for the songs.

In October 2014 her debut CD entitled What Was was released on Ergodos records to great acclaim. This was funded by the Music Network recording scheme.

She has a PhD in composition from the University of York and Masters in Music and Media Technologies from Trinity College Dublin where she currently lectures in the Music department.

Curiosity, fearlessness and versatility carry Lina Andonovska’s artistry around the globe. Andonovska is a rare breed in the flute world; a name that you’ll discover on both the pages of Rolling Stone and theAustralian Chamber Orchestra roster, she has not only cultivated partnerships with leading composers including Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, Bryce Dessner (The National) and flautist Claire Chase, but also deep community ties from Timor Leste to Tokyo’s incubator Wonder Site.

She has collaborated with groups including Crash Ensemble, Deutsches Kammerorchester, stargaze and Southern Cross Soloists. She is critically acclaimed for her interpretation of new music; Rolling Stone Magazine hailed her performance at Bang On A Can Summer Festival as “superbly played, [ranging] from sustained ‘somebody-please-get-that-tea-kettle’ squeaks to the flit and flutter of its beautifully lilting trills...”

As an orchestral player she has worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia and most of Australia’s symphony orchestras. As concerto soloist she has performed with Deutsches Kammerorchester, Orchestra Victoria, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia.

Recent performance credits include a solo performance at the Melbourne International Arts Festival that was noted as “re-defining the act of going solo“ (The Age), Brett Dean’s flute concerto Siduri Dances with Deutsches Kammerorchester, Tokyo Experimental Festival Grand Prize, appearances with stargaze at the Edinburgh International Festival, Berlin’s acclaimed Unerhörte Musik series and a solo recital at Musica Nova Helsinki. Lina released her debut solo album with Diatribe Records label in early 2020.
